Hey there babe, I hear a humming
The sweetest humming in my ear
Tells me babe, that I am falling
No more stalling, I am here

    This is where we start
    You stole away my heart
Let go of what has been
It’s time to let me in
    Let our love begin

    Whenever you’re away
I hear that singing of a life worth living by your side
Hey there babe, do you remember
When I said never, well I lied

You were not sure, you’ve been wrong before
    Love is tricky that way
    Rest easy, my dear
Cause I am here to stay

    This is where we start
    You stole away my heart
    You and I as one
    Could never be undone
Let go of what has been
It’s time to let me in
    Let our love begin

Looking for a way to buy some time
What I would have traded for some peace of mind
You tried to tell me, now or never
Lately I’ve been putting it all together

A never-ending story would suit me fine
Face it if I have to, somewhere down the line
But for now, let’s head the call
Winds they turn and stars they fall

How can we make it last, won’t you tell me that
Cause the morning is coming way too fast
Why don’t we make it last, don’t you tell me that
When tomorrow is here, the magic’s passed

The music is playing, I feel alright
All of my shadows leaving in the night
Come what may, let’s keep on going
Petty on repeat while the wind is blowing

    Mari Kreken: Vocals, acoustic guitar.
Tor-Egil Kreken: Vocals, Fender VI, banjo.
    Thomas Gallatin: Drums & percussion
    Christer Slaaen: Vocals, electric guitar

I’ve been lying to no one
    I’ve been searching for truth
While I was looking for answers
Have I been wasting my youth

I’ve been hiding from no one
    Except for maybe myself
While I was trying to find love
Did I forget who I am

    I can’t help it
    That feeling
Am I to let go or draw you near?

Mari Kreken: Vocals, acoustic guitar, dulcimer.
Tor-Egil Kreken: Vocals, Fender VI, banjo.
    Thomas Gallatin: Drums & percussion
    Kjetil Steensnæs: Pedal steel

Come and meet me down by the river Come stay by my side
Let’s greet the morning down by the river
    The world is open wide

I wanna stay in this place for a lifetime
I wanna steal every second I can get
I wanna keep my eyes open and take it all in

    I don’t wanna go, no, I don’t wanna go
    Don’t let me go

I wanna tell you to leave all your troubles behind
I wanna find any reason to stay
I’m gonna cling to your hand as it all comes alive

    I don’t wanna go, no, I don’t wanna go
    Don’t let me go

Meet me down, down by the river
Greet the day down by the river

Some say we won’t make it
I say we’ll never know unless we try
There are those who have lost it
Looking for their limit somewhere in the sky

But we’ll try, we will try

What happens if we don’t feel it
The thing we want is the thing that we fear
    It doesn’t matter, really
We’ll be forgotten by the end of the year

But we’ll try, we will try

I want to break free from being
An imitation of my inner voice
I can see real people every time
I’m able to look past the noise

    Why do I keep running
Letting precious moments just pass me by
Some say we won’t make it
I say we’ll never know unless we try

So we try, we will try, we will try

I have come back to where it began
Where affection grew and laughter rang
On the wall is an old guitar
    Memory-filled and battle-scarred

Looking at the shape of that D chord
Carved into the wood of a fingerboard
The voice that used a song to pray
Always skipping beats going to that A

When times got tough and the crowd got small
Your only way was through a wall
Fair weather ones will go away
But true friends are the ones who stay
True friends are the ones who stay

You made your rules and you cast your spell
On a bad day you would go through hell
And come back out on the other side
I kept my promise, and you your pride

Laying hands on a shooting star
Fell out of the sky too slow
Down on to the ground you flew so far
Just to let your troubles go

Mari Kreken: Vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica.
Tor-Egil Kreken: Vocals, Fender VI, banjo, electric guitar.
Christer Slaaen: Electric Guitar, vocals, mandolin.
Thomas Gallatin: Drums & percussion, vocals.
Kåre Chr. Vestrheim: Vocals, high-strung guitar.

In the dim light of a gas station restroom
I see the reflection of what I’ve become
Always a day behind, carrying all that’s mine
A dollar short, and not a lot of time

A string of decisions, bad ones mostly
You can see the signs if you look closely
That voice still ringing, ringing in my ear
If you are leaving, don’t you come back here

Now I’m going to find a place
Where I can spend the rest of my days
I’m pushing on through rain and snow
Stars will show me the way to go
    And I won’t stop until I know
That I have finally found my home

A taste of bitter in my coffee
The way that I skipped town, well, it suits me
You loved too little, I guess I loved too much
Quite unfortunate for the both of us

    Mari Kreken: Vocals, acoustic guitar.
Tor-Egil Kreken: Vocals, Fender VI, banjo, acoustic guitar.
    Thomas Gallatin: Drums & percussion
    Kjetil Steensnæs: Pedal steel

    Heard the news this morning
Frost barely gone from the ground
    Compassion died without mourning
    Chased away without a sound

    Answering the calling
Like a servant to a crown
    Trust comes with no warning
Time after time they let you down

Passed a sign out by the roadside Letters I could hardly see
Like a memory lost its meaning
    Slipped away from me

    Spring will turn to summer
Backs will turn and leave you cold
    I can’t help but wonder
When will mercy beat the gold

Mari Kreken: Vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar.
Tor-Egil Kreken: Vocals, Fender VI, banjo, acoustic guitar.
Thomas Gallatin: Vocals, Drums & percussion
    Christer Slaaen: Vocals, electric guitar.
    Kåre Chr. Vestrheim: Omnichord, kalimba.

If I had known back then what I know now
I would have tried to ease your burden somehow

O, love will not let you down
Into the great unknown willing to drown

See the world how it turns in the wrong direction
Led by those who don’t dare to see their own reflection
Remember the beat of your heart
You were right from the start
    Hold on

Even in times like these my hopes are high
Cause I can see the fire lit in your eyes

O, love will not let you down
Into the great unknown willing to drown

See the world how it turns in the wrong direction
Led by those who don’t dare to see their own reflection
Remember the beat of your heart
You were right from the start
    The beat of your heart
    Showing who you are
    The beat of your heart
It has brought you this far
    Hold on

    Mari Kreken: Vocals, acoustic guitar.
Tor-Egil Kreken: Vocals, Fender VI, banjo, electric guitar.
Thomas Gallatin: Drums & percussion, vocals.

I have a friend who I hadn’t seen in years
He lost his youngest one, he told me through his tears
We were already deep into a jug of wine
And suddenly I stopped feeling fine

    Sorrow will take you
    It will shake you
    How can anyone stand tall
    when mountains fall

He told me ‘bout the grief and how it left him numb
And all the people in the town that we both were from
How they all started to flinch and look the other way
And none of them had a single thing to say

I cannot even begin trying to comprehend
The hole in your heart and fearing it will never mend
You said it probably won’t, but you’re not sure it should
It’s a reminder to keep on doing good

Mari Kreken: Vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica.
Tor-Egil Kreken: Vocals, Fender VI, banjo.
Thomas Gallatin: Vocals, Drums & percussion
Christer Slaaen: Vocals, electric guitar.Kåre Chr. Vestrheim: Vocals.

Cosmic folk. That’s the term Lucinda Williams put on Darling West after sharing the stage with the Norwegian duo a few years back. An appropriate term, even though their new material also leans into sunny West Coast landscapes.

On “We’ll Never Know Unless We Try” the band serve up top-down-wind-in-the-hair pop songs along with tear-jerker ballads. With all the time spent and invested in the US the last three years, it just seems logical that the one and only Aaron Lee Tasjan has co-written one of the songs.

Main band members Mari and Tor Egil say on the process: «After two years of intense touring, and meeting tons of people, we are left with a feeling that there are many good forces at work in the world, even though the state of things can sometimes seem hopeless. Even though it wasn’t a planned theme in the songwriting process, we seem to have been inspired by this, and that hope and encouragement has become a common thread in our lyrical universe this time around.»

Darling West are always on the move. Since the release of their Spellemann-winning (Norwegian Grammy) album Vinyl and a Heartache (2016), they’ve been to the United States so often that you easily could call it their second homeland. Their Nordic twist on American songwriting traditions was further showcased with While I Was Asleep (2018). This time, parts of the new album was written in Nashville and on the tour both in the US and Europe.

«We’ll Never Know Unless We Try» was recorded in Propeller Studios in Oslo, and is produced by Kåre Chr. Vestrheim (Marit Larsen, Highasakite). The music regularly pay tribute to heroes such as Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne and The Byrds, while what’s become the trademark Darling West sound seeps through everything: With acoustic beauty, gorgeous harmonies and melodies that won’t let go
